Verse 2 – Clapham to Oval

The man in the seat across from me

I can see

is trying to read his paper

And talk to his girlfriend who

is trying to read her paper.

The man in the seat across from me

I can also see

is also trying to look at people getting off and on

And drink his ginger beer and talk

to his girlfriend who wants to read the paper

The man in the seat across from me

Might see me see him trying

to fix his gaze, avert his eyes

from the girl with the curls and very short shorts

standing in front of his girlfriend who is now reading the paper

The man in the seat across from me

no longer pretends not to see

the girl in shorts standing with legs just wide enough apart

Finally he cuts his eyes to the right lets them caress one leg then another

And I can see he wishes his girlfriend wouldn’t read the paper.
