All ABout Gaile

Hello I am Gaile and I have only ever wanted to be a writer, if only because I have been a voracious reader all my life.

I believe in the power of words, whether sung, spoken or written. They can change things and cause revolutions.

I am Jamaican and I love being Jamaican and freely own that Jamaica has made me who I am but that is not all I am. I am of this world and it adds to me and takes away from me as it does with everyone else.

I live in London and intend to live in a few more places as long as it is within my power, Italy is on top of my list and a desert island is a hot second.

I know what I like and what I don’t and am pretty firm in expressing my point of view. I try to be as open as I can and only ask the same of anyone else.

I love music and if I could not write would only wish I could sing.  Jazz breaks my heart, a saxophone kills me and the contralto range brings to me my knees, therefore Coltrane and Cassandra Wilson are in my pantheon.

I love tennis, playing it, watching it, talking about it and therefore Roger Federer is also a god.

And who writes like Toni Morrison, Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks is a singular genius and from my childhood Frank Yerby created world within and outside worlds and I thank him.

And the stories of my people exist to prevent the danger of falling for the single story as Adiche labels it, so Lorna Goodison, Earl Lovelace, Mervyn Morrison, Oonyah Kempadoo, Samuel Selvoin, Claude McKay and a list too long to mention inspire always. I recognise that the decision to give your life over to writing is stepping out on the rope without a net. An act of necessary bravery and I salute it.

I love my life and I am living it as if it were golden (props to Ms Scott for a perfect line).

I love my family and I have a story to tell and I want to hear as many stories as I can.
